Sexually Transmitted Infections

Sexually transmitted diseases, as they are commonly known, are referred to by the World Health Organization (WHO) as Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs). The WHO updated this terminology because not all infections develop into diseases. Many diseases do begin as infections, but using “infection” instead of “disease” also helps reduce the stigma associated with these conditions.

STIs include a wide range of infections caused by bacteria, viruses, and parasites that are transmitted from person to person through sexual contact. It is important to recognize the main symptoms and warning signs in order to act quickly and seek professional care.

Here, you can find descriptions of the most common STIs, learn what steps to take if you are infected, and understand how to manage your health while living with an STI.
