PAR Seminar 2023

The 1st edition of the PAR Seminar took place on October 10, 2023 and brought together several Plano AproXima partners to discuss a range of issues, including the regulation of sex work, police violence, discrimination, and lack of access to healthcare and housing.

In 2023, the city of Coimbra hosted the first PAR Seminar — Associative Perspectives on Sex Work, an initiative by Plano AproXima, supported by Classificados X and in partnership with the Porto G project from APDES.

The event brought together sex workers, activists, researchers, and associations from across the country to discuss the main challenges faced by those engaged in sex work — and how to overcome them.

Police violence, discrimination, and lack of access to healthcare and housing were among the most highlighted issues, but strong and inspiring voices also called for concrete solutions, such as the regulation of sex work, the creation of support networks, and the recognition of the right to dignity at all stages of life.

An active voice, a common struggle — for dignity, regulation, and respect

The testimonies shared during the Seminar reinforced the importance of sex workers being active participants in the decisions that affect them. The urgency for clear, fair, and human rights–centered regulation was at the heart of the discussions — with interventions from representatives of MTS — Movimento dxs Trabalhadorxs do Sexo, ESWA — European Sex Workers’ Rights Alliance, and several civil society organizations.

The role of advocacy, sexual assistance for people with functional diversity, and the impact of human trafficking on the lives of migrants and vulnerable individuals were also discussed.

The sharing of experiences among associations was a highlight of the seminar, fostering networks of solidarity and joint strategies for a more just future.
